About Joyce

Empowering parents to become their child's strongest advocate.

Joyce Onafowokan is an experienced Early Intervention professional and parent advocate dedicated to helping families understand their rights and navigate developmental disability services with confidence.

My Story

Why this work is personal.

I was drawn to working with families of infants and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities because disability has always been part of my life story.

Nearly fifty years ago, my sister survived a shooting accident that took the lives of everyone else involved. She was the only survivor. The injuries left her with paralysis on her left side and bullet fragments still lodged in her brain. Despite unimaginable trauma and lifelong physical challenges, she persevered with extraordinary determination and went on to earn a PhD.

Growing up, I rarely thought of her as “disabled.” She was simply my sister — brilliant, resilient, independent, and deeply strong. Only recently have I begun to fully appreciate the quiet ways she adapted to a world that was not built for her, and the courage that took every single day.

Her life shaped the way I see children and families. I understand that a diagnosis or disability does not define a person’s potential. I have seen firsthand the importance of support, encouragement, early intervention, and believing in what is possible. That perspective continues to guide my work with families as they navigate uncertainty, celebrate progress, and advocate for their children.

Background

Experience that families can lean on.

Joyce Onafowokan has spent her career supporting children with developmental delays and disabilities and the families who love them. Through her work in Early Intervention, she has walked alongside parents through evaluations, service planning, IEP meetings, and the often-daunting transition from Early Intervention to school-based services.

That experience gives her a clear, practical understanding of how these systems work — and where parents most often feel lost, unheard, or overwhelmed. She bridges that gap, translating dense paperwork and unfamiliar processes into plain language families can actually use.

A heart for families

Joyce has supported countless parents through some of the most stressful moments of their parenting journey — always with patience, warmth, and respect.
